Aug. 21-24: Scriptwriting Workshop with Tim McIntosh

Write Your Movie, Write Your Play!

Scriptwriting is an unrivaled joy—even more so when you know what you're doing. It's a mode of expression that puts you in the driver's seat. Scriptwriting lets you visualize and perform the stories and ideas you feel strongly about. It's an opportunity for you to be an active producer and not just a passive consumer.

Perhaps you aspire to be the next great independent filmmaker. Or maybe you just want to entertain your friends with a clever story. Either way, your script will come to life if you know how to craft a great plot, intriguing characters, and tense conflict.

This class is for screenwriters and playwrights who want to develop their own script or work on a draft-in-progress. In this class we will ...

* Analyze films that work
* Perform gripping dialogue
* Write to "show" not "tell"
* Learn the habits of good writers

During the course of the seminar, participants will write their own five-to-ten minute script. The winning script will be awarded and filmed (at no cost to the student).

This class is intended for beginning screenwriters and playwrights. Classes will be cozy and designed for plenty of interaction with the teacher and other students.
Who Is Teaching It?

Tim McIntosh is a screenwriter, playwright, and actor. His most recent play, Søn of Abraham, received a Best New Play of 2008 award from the Chattanooga Theatre Centre. His screenplay Mandi is scheduled for release this winter by Kalon Media. Recent acting credits include the Manhattan Crack'r and Swamp Robber.
How Much Does It Cost?

The cost is $95. Some scholarships are available. Enrollment is limited.

When and Where Will It Happen?

May 27th ~ 7pm

Sunnyside Environmental School
3421 SE Salmon Street, Portland

With Local Bluegrass from
Choctaw Ridge

Choctaw Ridge is Athena Patterson, Chick Rose, Gene Alger, and SES Student Kian Dye

On October 25th, 2007 Kerrie Hubbard was diagnosed with Diffuse Large B-cell Non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Since then she has endured 6 rounds of debilitating chemotherapy and is now, thankfully, officially in remission and cancer free. Unfortunately, she is left with large medical bills as she tries to get back on track with work.

Kerrie is a passionate artist who makes her living doing an assortment of freelance jobs so that she has time to pursue her other passion – helping people. She has been involved with charity cycling events, Habitat For Humanity, homeless outreach, and the Be A Hero project to help orphans in DR Congo, just to name a few. Kerrie has given so much of her time and her heart and now she needs our help.

Local Jazz Artist Selling Album for Adoption:

Recording artist, Mindy Anderson, recently released the jazz album, "Rooted", created to help provide children the opportunity to experience the lasting hope and joy of being rooted in a loving family. In partnership with the Ibsen Adoption Network (www.ibsenadopt.org), all proceeds from the album will go to support special needs adoption. Ibsen is a private, Christian, nonprofit organization that for the past ten years has been working to raise awareness about the needs of waiting children, giving grants towards the cost of adoption, and developing support groups for adoptive families. "Thousands of children in the United States are trapped in the foster care system waiting for a permanent family and millions of children worldwide will go to sleep tonight in an orphanage or alone on the street. Although we cannot help every waiting child in the world, together, one child at a time, we can help give children the opportunity to experience the life changing gift of family."

Please buy an album for yourself and friends to support the cause of adoption. "Rooted" will be available to purchase online on or around May 5th at www.mindyanderson.com (all proceeds will be given to the Ibsen Adoption Network). For samples of the music and more information on the album please visit Mindy Anderson on facebook or at www.myspace.com/mindyrooted. She can also be emailed directly at anderson.mindy@gmail.com

Karaoke Throwdown

Hey Hey Hello~

This Friday May 2nd at the Gallery Homeland, the PDX film festival is having a Karaoke throwdown night.

What is this you ask?

Well, about a month ago I threw together a funny lil Karaoke video for the song “ You’ve gotta friend”. Gretchen Hogue who curates the PDX Film Festival gathered a handful of local filmmakers to do the same. There is free Pabst all evening for all you poor artist friends of mine. Come along and sing or just come on out and watch some creative videos.

The First Ever Experimental Filmmaker Karaoke Throwdown @ galleryHomeland
10 pm May 2nd
Join us for a brand new PDX Fest event! We have invited a handful of our favorite filmmakers to create homemade karaoke videos to their favorite karaoke songs. Audience members will get to perform songs from this custom made catalog and experience an all-new way of doing Karaoke!

The PDX Film Festival runs April 30-May 4th

There are some great films showing. I’m always a little skeptical going to these events because it’s a real gamble if you’ll end up sitting through a dreadful experimental piece or if you find a real gem. I have an “inside” to the better ones, so if you’re interested let me know and I’ll tell ya which ones to sneak into and which ones to avoid.

Paint in Japan

If you ever wanted to go draw and paint in Japan but thought it was too expensive, then think again.

From years of traveling to Japan Gary Snavely has learned how to do it as cheaply as possible. He knows all kinds of good places to paint and even where to buy art supplies at half the price of what you would pay in the States.
Gary is guiding a small group of artists on a trip to Tokyo and the surrounding area September 29 through October 13. The entire cost for the trip would be less than $3000,00 at current prices.

If you would like more information email Gary at gwsnavely@yahoo.com or call him at 503-650-6440. He attends the 12 O’clock service at Imago Dei so it would be easy to link up before or after a service to talk.

Project Youth Doc at the Hollywood Theatre

The four week course is team taught by 4 professional filmmakers with years of real world experience. At the end of the program all of the films are screened at the Hollywood Theatre for family, friends and community members; students also receive a DVD copy of their work.
