Film Action Oregon (FAO), the nonprofit that owns and operates the Hollywood Theatre has helped students ages 13-15 create over 30 films since the inception of FAO’s Project Youth Doc (PYD) summer documentary film production classes in 2004. PYD students attend class Monday through Friday for 4 weeks for 5 hours each day during the summer learning the ins and outs of video production, from story boarding and pitching their ideas, to learning the basics of cinematography, lighting and sound. Students shoot their films on professional gear – HD cameras and industry standard sound and lighting equipment and edit on state of the art editing bays equipped with Final Cut Pro. The four week course is team taught by 4 professional filmmakers with years of real world experience. At the end of the program all of the films are screened at the Hollywood Theatre for family, friends and community members; students also receive a DVD copy of their work.
PYD is open to all youth 13-15 with an interest in film. This year only one PYD session is open to the general public; this session begins on July 21st and concludes on August 15th. Tuition for all 4 weeks is just $400. Class size is restricted to 16 students. Financial assistance is available to those who qualify.
