Inklings

Is any pleasure on earth as great as a circle of Christian friends by a fire? (C. S. Lewis)

In the tradition of the Oxford Inklings, a new Connection Group will begin meeting in January. The Imago Dei Inklings will gather to share our lives by discussing Faith issues openly and honestly in anticipation of discovering a deeper understanding and appreciation of our Faith in Christ. We will revisit and embrace some of the most stirring and impacting voices of the Christian tradition that have withstood the winds of time and are worthy of our attention. Who were the Oxford Inklings? Author Humphrey Carpenter best describes them as “a group of writers whose literary fantasies still fire the imagination of all those who seek a truth beyond reality.” During their many meetings, Charles Williams, C. S. Lewis, J. R. R. Tolkien and others read aloud and awaited criticism to hone and polish their finished draft. It was this process forged through their friendship and genuine interest in each other’s lives that produced works such as The Screwtape Letters, The Lion, The Witch & The Wardrobe and The Lord of the Rings .

The Imago Dei Inklings will turn back the page of time and read from Christian Classics such as Till We Have Faces, The Two Towers, The Place of the Lion, The Great Divorce and others. Our goal will be to enjoy our time together as we journey through some of the most compelling Christian books of our Age. Most importantly, friendships will grow, as Truth is revealed encouraging and expanding our relationship with each other and our Lord. Our lives will ‘be transformed by the renewing of our minds” which will help us to have more compassion and better relate to those in desperate need of Christ’s forgiveness and love.

Our first meeting will be the evening of Thursday, January 10th at Sydney’s in Portland. Contact Darren Jacobs at oxfordspires@msn.com or 360.798.0953 for additional info.
